Terrorism And The Constitution Act - 1748 Words

Terrorism and the Constitution is organized in four parts. The first provides an historical account of federal investigations of First Amendment activities, focusing on the FBI’s investigative activities prior to 9/11. The authors make a persuasive case that the FBI’s investigative power has frequently been used to harass those involved in controversial political activities, and to disrupt controversial social movements, even where no evidence of illegal activity has been noted. To do this, the authors begin the book with five stories, examples of â€Å"the recurring nature of the government’s misguided response to ideological threats.† The stories begin in the years of the Cold War and end in an account of law enforcement since 2001. In Part Three, Cole and Dempsey focus on the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1996, a forerunner to the Patriot Act that helped to establish the legal framework for today’s domestic war on terror. The act allows the State Department to designate Foreign Terrorist Organizations in a process that is highly politicized and lacking sufficient objective criteria. It also makes it possible for government prosecutors to bring cases against individuals without proof that they have engaged in terrorism, aided or abetted terrorists, or planned to commit terrorism. Under the 1996 act, the government may freeze the assets of designated terrorist groups and use secret witnesses against those suspected of having links to terrorists. How The Era Is Remembered - 2232 Words

Within every decade there are peaks and valleys which define how the era is remembered. Each decade is remembered for different things, such as the 1900’s being remembered for the invention of the airplane and the beginning of silent movies. While the 1950’s remind people of recovering from war, a new symphonic style of music, and the launch of Sputnik 1, it also brings back memories of the Korean War, McCarthyism, and the beginning of decolonization in Asia and Africa. The 60 s are often recalled as being the era that the Cold War heated up along with John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and the 70’s as the â€Å"hippie† decade. The positive and negative events of each decade leave some more memorable than others, a classic example of†¦show more content†¦The 90’s are referred to as â€Å"the last great generation† due to the events that occurred in the 2000’s such as 9/11 and the overpowering advancement of technology. While the â€Å"adults† were wrapped up in the economy and political events that were occurring at this time, younger people were busy enjoying life as it was without worries. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 2000’s that they realized that life wasn’t so easy and that they did have things to worry about, making them want to go back to the 90’s where they remember life being far less complicated. The simplicity of life and ease of living for the youth during the 1990’s causes it to now be regarded as one of the most nostalgic eras in history by Generation Y, although somewhat unfavorable by older generations. As previously mentioned, each generation has both positive and negative aspects. The 90’s can be thought of as an amazing decade where life was simpler, the economy was booming, and the World Wide Web was taking off. However, some people could argue that the 90’s was full of racism, controversy, that brought on new waves of terrorism. While analyzing what could qualify the 1990’s as nostalgic, I found multiple events that both supported and argued my claim. Compare/Contrast Traveling Through the Dark and Woodchucks

Compare and Contrast Essay In the poems â€Å"Traveling Through the Dark† and â€Å"Woodchucks† man must make a decision about nature in the most inconvenient ways. In â€Å"Traveling Through the Dark† the narrator is faced with, literally, a life or death situation, whereas in â€Å"Woodchucks† the narrator is faced under the Darwinian belief about killing. Both poems reveal the interpersonal relationship between man and animal as well as the moral dilemma that man faces with nature. However, through the use of narration, vivid imagery, and personification, the poets show one speaker’s sympathetic attitude towards the animals while the other speaker has an adversarial attitude toward them. Stafford’s poem, â€Å"Traveling Through the Dark,† deals with the†¦show more content†¦Kumin uses vivid imagery to describe the destruction that the woodchucks caused. â€Å"They brought down the marigolds as a matter of course† and â€Å"beheaded the carrots.† This introduces the speaker’s adversarial tone throughout the rest of the poem. She immediately seeks revenge on the woodchuck family. The author states that the speaker, at one point, was not a violent person. â€Å"I, a lapsed pacifist fallen from grace puffed with Darwinian pieties for killing.† Now, the author shows the speaker’s â€Å"survival of the fittest† beliefs in order to express the ongoing adventure of killing the woodchucks. She shot the smallest woodchuck first and watched it fall into the roses. The author provides more imagery to describe the manner in which the mother woodchuck died. â€Å"She flip-flopped in the air and fell, her needle teeth still hooked in a leaf of early Swiss chard.† By doing this, it is easy to imagine the ball of fur tumbling through the air, dead. Kumin shows the speaker’s seek for vengeance when she begins to kill all of the woodchucks. â€Å"O one-two-three t he murderer inside me rose up hard.† Here, the revenge that the speaker is in search of is noticed. The author puts into her poem that the last woodchuck is an â€Å"old wily fellow,† implying that he is clever and sneaky. The

While the ACA makes health insurance required by law increasing the number of people in the U.S. who have health insurance, it also has elements which do not completely benefit the patient, provider or insurance completely and is therefore â€Å"watered down.† There are many reasons for this. One of the reasons is that the ACA had a lot of money that was spent on lobbyists. This was illustrated in the ACA video shown in class. From that video it became known that Obama had to have â€Å"buy-ins† with many congress people for them to vote for the ACA bill. There were several congress people with ties to special interest groups, lobbyists and corporations. Parts of the ACA were therefore negotiated in order to satisfy multiple groups resulting in a â€Å"watered-down† product. Another important element was the fact that public health is not properly funded to address many of the health care needs such as disease prevention with only a small percentage of funding going to public health. This emphasizes the point that there is minimal importance given to this sector in health care. Lastly, the ACA faced the challenge due to the same opposition and concerns from the past. Concerns such as maintaining privatized insurance, paying the cost of this reform on the nation, and increasing the burden on employers. 2.
